Why Some Brains Can't Sit Through a YouTube Video — What the Research Actually Says

You open a 40-minute video with the best intentions. Ninety minutes and three rabbit holes later, you never found the thing you came for. If you have ADHD, this pattern feels personal — like a failure of effort or discipline. But it turns out researchers have actually studied this. And what they found makes it much harder to frame as a willpower problem.


What Researchers Found When They Studied ADHD Viewers

In a 2025 study published on arXiv, HCI researchers Hanxiu 'Hazel' Zhu, Ruijia Chen, and Yuhang Zhao set out to understand specifically what makes informational video watching hard for people with ADHD — and what might help. The paper, titled FocusView: Understanding and Customizing Informational Video Watching Experiences for Viewers with ADHD, involved 12 ADHD participants watching educational video content in a controlled study.

The core finding confirmed something ADHD viewers already suspect but rarely see acknowledged in research: informational and educational video is specifically hard for ADHD viewers because the same dynamic, multimodal elements meant to make video more engaging — visual movement, music, rapid cuts, layered audio — can simultaneously increase distraction rather than reduce it. The format is doing two things at once, and for ADHD viewers, those two things pull in opposite directions.

The researchers built an experimental interface called FocusView that let viewers customize the video experience across multiple dimensions — adjusting the layout, turning captions on or off, modifying background music and ambient audio, changing visual presentation. The goal was to give ADHD viewers the ability to tune the video environment to match how their attention works, rather than forcing everyone through the same one-size-fits-all experience.

It worked. FocusView significantly improved what the researchers call "viewability" — the ability to actually get through a video without losing the thread. But the study also surfaced something counterintuitive: individual ADHD viewers have very different relationships with the same stimuli. Some participants found background music deeply distracting; others found silence more distracting, and needed ambient sound to focus. Some needed more visual structure; others needed less. ADHD isn't a single attentional profile — it's a category that contains a lot of different patterns.

Perhaps the most interesting design finding: giving viewers too many customization options made things worse, not better. Reducing the number of available controls was necessary because the act of customizing itself — evaluating options, making decisions, adjusting settings — was introducing exactly the kind of distraction the interface was trying to remove. The researchers had to balance "give users enough control" against "don't make this another thing to manage."


Two Approaches to the Same Problem

FocusView's approach is a video-modification strategy: customize the video experience to match how the viewer's attention works. That's a legitimate and well-reasoned approach, and the research suggests it works.

Recognized ADHD organizations have noted that infinite scroll and autoplay-driven video feeds create a specific attention challenge for ADHD users — one that goes beyond the content of any particular video. The design pattern isn't neutral: it's engineered to override the user's stated intention and substitute the platform's recommendation for it. For a user without ADHD, this is annoying. For a user with ADHD who is already working against a brain that struggles to maintain a chosen direction, it's a significant structural obstacle.

The rabbit hole isn't a character flaw. It's what happens when an attention system that routes itself toward novelty meets a platform explicitly designed to deliver a continuous stream of novelty.


What This Means Practically

The research translates into something important: this is a format problem, not a person problem. Long-form informational video assumes a kind of sustained, sequential attention — "start here, follow the thread, reach the conclusion" — that doesn't match how ADHD attention allocates itself. ADHD attention is better characterized as interest-driven and non-linear. It can be intense, it can be deep, but it doesn't follow a 90-minute prescribed path unless the path is continuously interesting in exactly the right ways.

That's not a bug. But it does mean that the strategies that help are the ones that work with this attention pattern rather than demanding it be overridden.

What actually helps

Decide before you commit. The uncertainty of "I don't know if this video will pay off" is one of the biggest task-initiation barriers for ADHD viewers. Removing that uncertainty before you press play — with a summary, a verdict, and a sense of where the relevant parts are — reduces the decision cost and makes starting significantly easier.
