Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

Account information

When you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google OAuth. We store your email and plan status to identify your account and gate features.

Usage data

We log the YouTube video IDs you submit for analysis. These are stored to cache Summaries (so repeat lookups are instant) and to track your daily usage against plan limits.

Lens inputs

If you use a personalised lens (e.g. "I'm learning Python"), the text you enter is sent to our analysis pipeline per-request. It is not stored after the request completes.

Technical data

We collect standard server logs including IP addresses, browser user agents, and request timestamps. These are used for security, debugging, and abuse prevention and are not linked to your identity for marketing purposes.

Payment data

Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card number or full payment details. We receive a Stripe customer ID and subscription status.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To provide and operate the Focal service.
• To enforce plan limits and process payments.
• To cache Summaries and speed up repeat requests.
• To send transactional emails (e.g. billing receipts) — no marketing without your opt-in.
• To detect and prevent fraud or abuse.
• To improve the service through aggregate, anonymised analytics.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use it for advertising.

3. Data Retention

Cached Summaries are retained indefinitely to keep the service fast. They contain no personal information — only a video ID and the generated analysis.

Account records are kept for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for fraud prevention.

Server logs are retained for up to 90 days.

4. Sharing and Third Parties

We share data only as necessary to operate the service:

• Cloudflare — hosts our API, Workers, and D1 database. Data is processed under Cloudflare's data processing agreement.
• Google / YouTube — we fetch caption data from YouTube's public APIs. Your Google account is used for authentication only.
• Stripe — processes payments and manages subscriptions.
• AI providers — video transcripts are sent to LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Mistral) to generate Summaries. Transcripts are not linked to your account before transmission.

We do not share your personal data with any other third party, and we do not permit our service providers to use your data for their own purposes.

5. Cookies and Local Storage

Focal uses a session cookie to keep you signed in. We also use browser local storage to remember your lens preferences. We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising cookies.

6. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@usefocal.xyz and we will respond within 30 days.

You can delete your account at any time from the account menu. Deleting your account removes your profile and usage history.

7. Children's Privacy

Focal is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe we have done so inadvertently, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of Focal after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
